The value of connections...

This was supposed to be Spring Break week.  Many of us had plans to travel and gather with loved ones.  Instead, we are staying home and staying apart.

Humans are social beings.  We're not used to being isolated from each other. Thankfully, technology offers wonderful opportunities to stay connected with each other.  There are many digital platforms that are free and accessible on most personal devices.  We are using apps like Facetime, Skype, and Zoom to connect with our coworkers and those we love the most.  These sessions lift our spirits and keep us grounded.

We are doing everything we can to help you stay connected to Wood Library and our community.  In addition to this newsletter, we are posting regularly on FacebookInstagram, and YouTube, offering a variety of helpful and uplifting content that we hope you will find useful and fun.

Please, if you are feeling alone and anxious during this time, we urge you to take advantage of these resources:

The New York State Office of Mental Health is working around the clock to help people who are struggling at this time.  If you or someone you care about needs assistance, do not hesitate to call the Emotional Support Hotline: 1-844-863-9314.

The New York State Department of Health has a 24/7 hotline to answer any of your coronavirus-related questions. To reach them, please call 1-888-364-3065.

This week New York State also launched a partnership with Headspace to offer free meditations and mindfulness exercises. Visit http://www.headspace.com/ny to access music and soundscapes.

Please continue to connect with us by email.  Library staff will make every effort to respond within 24 hours.

We miss you, but are grateful for the opportunities to connect with you on our social media platforms.  It's not the same as visiting with you in the library, but your encouraging comments, likes, and thumbs up help us feel connected to you.  Thanks.

Good news to note

Katie Smith, our wonderful Teen Services Librarian, returned to work today after an extended maternity leave.  Stay tuned as she has a lot of ideas to share about how teens can stay engaged in learning, creating, and exploring during this time of social distancing.

This is an uncertain time for everyone.  Wood Library is attempting to brighten your day by offering free access to WiFi, digital collections, and uplifting content.  On April 23, 2020, you will be invited to demonstrate your support for these services by making a gift to Wood Library.  We know that some of you are not in a position to donate at this time, and that is okay.  For those of you who are able to help, we will gratefully accept donations of any amount.  All gifts made on April 23 will be used to purchase additional digital content for our collection.  Stay tuned for details.
